Digital technology - can teachers be replaced by technology in the future?

“Robots won’t replace teachers because they can’t inspire us.”

This quote is so true, without teachers there won’t be communication skills, no manners, no role models, and no common sense. Children would not be able to sit GCSE’s or A-levels properly as there would not be any support or personal help for them, so if technology was to take over from teacher’s children’s grades would fall tremendously.

Study suggests technology will never take over from teachers, as technology has not got the life experiences and knowledge to bring to the classroom. Teachers bring a change in a way technology never can. “A teacher leads, guides, facilitates and mentors a student.” (edsys, 2015) Teachers drive children forward to a brighter future, as they are full of passion and commitment in what they do, they encourage independent thoughts and learning to their students, this could never be achieve through virtual learning.

It is not just teachers scared about losing their jobs to technology it’s a wide range of other too, here’s a quote to show just that:

Andy Haldane, the chief economist at the Bank of England, recently estimated that 15m jobs in the UK were threatened by automation. Technology is reaching such levels of sophistication that it is capable not only of manual tasks but cognitive ones too, putting a wide range of jobs are at risk. The area’s most vulnerable include driving and administrative work. But according to a report from Oxford University that looked at over 700 areas of work, teaching at all levels across the educational spectrum is a safe bet.” (Harpreet Purewal, 2016)

In my opinion I don’t think technology could every replace a teacher, because of the relationship, friendship and partnership that is built between child and teacher and parent and teacher, its something technology could never do. It could never provide support or passion. But it technology was to ever take over I think children will be staying at home and having to logged on their computer or tablets at home and given virtual lessons. I don’t think schools will exist in the future, children will be at home learning, and GCSE’s and A-levels will be held at local community halls under exam rules, but everything will be taught to them online.

It’s a shame thinking teachers could be replaced as the only reason I enjoyed going to school was to see my teachers and friends, its social skills for children to learn to, if sat in the house learning children will start to feel isolated no one to talk to. I would do my homework the night before and if I was stuck id go n and ask for help, my teacher then would sit down with me and help and explain bit by bit on what to do, technology is never going to be able to do that.
